Learning To Choose Yourself

Choose the parts that make you feel whole

Simple things are scary. Simple questions are jarring.

Simplicity frightens us because it implies that we should have clarity while addressing it. But often, the opposite is true.

“Who are you”?

Each time I think of it, I shudder.

“Tell me about yourself!”

When someone asks me, I freeze in my tracks — instantly forgetting everything that makes me myself — dissolving into a meaningless mist.

“What do you do?”

What don’t I do? Being multi-passionate can feel like a curse. A battle of a thousand swords lodged in your heart.

“What do you like?”

I shrink and question my tastes and preferences. Are they too odd, dull, rigid? I‘m I delusional, in a bubble, or eccentric but not in a fascinating way?

“Who do you love?”

No one asks this. But they should. For this, I’ll answer with a cringe that turns into a faraway look and descends into tears. Those I love break my heart by the thought of losing them. So I try not to think of love or loving them but instead paint moments together so that they stay in my heart, and hopefully, I in theirs.

Who are you?

The question of identity lingers in the air. Giving you the chance to choose between words that paint the best contours of you or those that lurk in the shadows that haunt you.

It’s the choice we wake up to. What did you choose today?
